German players in Real Madrid | Germany World Cup jersey

Sporting Goods | Real Madrid players:
Germany is making quite an impact at the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The German team is now going to face Spain in the semi-final for a place in the World Cup 2010 final.
The list of Germans who have played in Real Madrid include Netzer, Stielike, Breitner, Schuster during the 70s and 80s. Illgner during the 90s and latest Metzelder during the 00s of the 21st century.

German players have also contributed to the history of Real Madrid

Among these players both Breitner and Netzer was on the winning side for Germany at the World Cup 1974 in Germany. And Bodo Illgner won with Germany in the World Cup 1990.

In the current side at the World Cup 2010 in Germany there are no current Real Madrid players. The last German player to figure in the German squad from Real Madrid was Metzelder but he is not traveling with the team to South Africa.
Furthermore Metzelder will play in Schalke 04 for the season 2010/11 so while he might only officially change side 1st of July it is all by a formality if he is still listed as being a Real Madrid player.

Atletico Madrid player Diego Forlan | Forlan 7 jersey – shorts – boots . . .

Player Profile:
Atletico Madrid striker star Diego Forlan has brought glory to the club 48 years later.
Atletico Madrid last won a European tournament during the season 1961/62. Atleti won against Fiorentina with 3-0 in the final of European Cup Winners Cup.
The last domestic honors were harvested during the 1995/96 when the club won the double. So it has been a long drought which has now finally come to an end. And to no small extent due to the achievements of Diego Forlan. The Uruguay striker whose nickname among the fans is “uruguajo” due to the way people from that region of South America pronounce the “yo” at the end of words like uruguayo.

In Atletico Diego Forlan wears the number 7 jersey.

Diego Forlan wearing the number 7 jersey with FORLAN 7 written on the back likewise wears the number 7 on the shorts. The number is placed on the right leg.

And essential part of the football players uniform is of course the boots. The soccer players run individual contracts with the footwear makers and thus the players are not obliged to play in the same brand of footwear as the club’s athletic apparel sponsor. It might be hard to spot in the photo but Forlan is wearing an adidas Predator boot. Atletico Madrid plays in Nike but Forlan is sponsored by adidas endorsing adidas footwear and possibly also leisure wear clothing.

Real Madrid | the second most popular club in … Germany .. after FC Bayern

Analysis:
In Spain it is clear to most people that the two by far dominating clubs and the two by far most popular clubs are Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. In Italy the by far most successful clubs and also the most popular ones are the Milan duo AC and Inter and the Torino club Juventus. But in the case of Germany it is probably not so clear which is the second club. FC Bayern is by far the most successful German club. It is probably also well-perceived that FC Bayern is the most popular club around Germany and is THE force in German football.
But what might come as a bigger surprise is that the second most popular team in Germany is not a German team but …. Real Madrid followed by FC Barcelona.
Most popular soccer team in Germany – FC Bayern .. then Real Madrid

The second most popular German club is SV Werder Bremen which has been statistically the second best team in Germany in the first decade of the 21st century. While the second best German club during the 1990s Borrusia Dortmund comes in the third.

According to the survey FC Barcelona is the most popular club European wide while Real Madrid comes in second followed by Manchester United. FC Bayern is 6th. 4th and 5th might be Arsenal and AC Milan but it is not mentioned exactly in the article used as reference (see the link above). Liverpool, Juventus, and Inter probably have a more regional fanbase since their prime time was before soccer took off as a big industry and with Champions League during the early 1990s. A lot of fan affiliation started to shift during this period of time from the local, regional, or national perspective to become more international. The outcome for many would be to support the local team + one or more of the big clubs internationally (or nationally depending on where one lives). Success and star players are crucial in this process of fan formation and the most successful clubs during the 1990s and 2000s have been Manchester United and Arsenal in England. Barca and Madrid in Spain. AC Milan and partly Juventus in Italy. FC Bayern in Germany and to a certain extent Borrusia Dortmund though their success quickly faded.

The efficiency of changing the coach … at Real Madrid

Analysis:
Whenever Real Madrid loses a match the Spanish press in particular the Madrid daily sportspaper Marca cries out: sack the coach!
It seems to be the universal and very short term solution to a problem regarding the performance of the 11 players on the field.
So let’s look at the numbers for the past 20 years to see if the change of coach has brought significant results.

The columns read: season | coach | nationality | titles (if any otherwise blank)
1990/91 Alfredo Di Stefano Argentinian (naturalized Spaniard): 1 Spanish Super Cup
1991/92 Antic Yugoslavian:
1992/93 Leo Beenhakker Dutch:
1992/93 Benito Floro Spaniard: 1 Spanish Cup | 1 Spanish Super Cup
1994/95 Vicente Del Bosque Spaniard: (just serving for a couple of months until new coach was appointed).
1994/95 Jorge Valdano Argentinian: 1 League
1995/96 Jorge Valdano
1996/97 Arsenio Iglesias Spaniard:
1996/97 Fabio Capello Italian: 1 League
1997/98 Heynckes German: 1 Spanish Super Cup | 1 Champions League
1998/99 Hiddink Dutch: 1 Intercontinental Cup
1999/00 Toshack Welch:
1999/00 Vicente Del Bosque Spaniard: 1 Champions League
2000/01 Vicente Del Bosque 1 League
2001/02 Vicente Del Bosque 1 Champions League | 1 Spanish Super Cup
2002/03 Vicente Del Bosque 1 League | 1 Intercontinental Cup | 1 European Super Cup
2003/04 Carlos Queiroz Portuguese: 1 Spanish Super Cup
2004/05 José A. Camacho Spaniard:
2004/05 Mariano G. Remón Spaniard:
2004/05 Vanderlei Luxemburgo Brazilian:
2005/06 Juan Ramón López Caro Spaniard:
2006/07 Fabio Capello Italian: 1 League
2007/08 Bernd Schuster German: 1 League
2008/09 Bernd Schuster German:
2008/09 Juande Ramos Spaniard:
2009/10 Manuel Pellegrini Chilean:

The numbers are taken from the website Real Madrid coaches
So over the past 20 years Real Madrid has had 21 coaches if each period of Capello and Del Bosque who both served 2 terms are counted individually. This means that on average the Real Madrid coach has served less than 1 season at a time. Over the same time span Real Madrid has won 18 titles taken all together.
Primary:
6 league titles | 3 Champions League titles. Total of 9 primary titles.
Secondary:
1 Spanish Cup | 5 Spanish Super Cups | 2 InterContinental Cups | 1 European SuperCup. Total of 9 secondary titles.

The by far most successful coach was Vicente Del Bosque with 7 titles during his second reign at the club which lasted for a whole 4 seasons by far the longest time any Real Madrid coach has served throughout the past 20 years.
13 international coaches (counting Capello twice). Winning 9 titles. 8 out of the 13 coaches serving (again counting Capello twice) managed to win at least one trophy in any competition.
8 Spanish coaches (counting Del Bosque twice). Winning 9 titles. Only Del Bosque and Benito Flores have won anything among the Spanish coaches.
It seems to be impossible to find any pattern as to the relationship between wins and the coach (or the firing or hiring of coaches) except for the period of 4 seasons where Vicente Del Bosque served and where Real Madrid won no less than 7 trophies including! 2 League titles and 2 Champions Leagues titles by far the most coveted trophies.
So if the recent history of Real Madrid coaches shows anything at all – because of course there are many other factors in play such as quality of players – opponents – luck – format of tournament etc. in order to determine success – it is that some kind of continuity on the bench is key.
While one has to give credit to Fabio Capello as well for having won 2 out of 2 League titles as coach of Real Madrid.
Curiously enough Del Bosque and Capello will both be present at the World Cup 2010 in South Africa as national team coaches leading the way for Spain and England respectively towards the glory and immortality.

Messi | Ronaldo | FC Barcelona | Real Madrid | adidas | Nike

Sportsmoney:
The match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona “El Clasico” the absolute highlight of the Spanish season is not just a match between two sports clubs. But also a match between the two giants in the world of sporting goods brands adidas and Nike.
Real Madrid is sponsored by adidas. FC Barcelona is sponsored by Nike. Lionel Messi is sponsored by adidas. Cristiano Ronaldo is sponsored by Nike.
But not only the absolute superstars of the two teams wear nike/adidas boots. Most other players in the two teams wear footwear from one of the two athletic apparel brand giants.
Among the more prominent players in FC Barcelona in adidas footwear:
Messi, Xavi, Milito.
Real Madrid players in adidas:
Higuain, Raul, Kaka, Benzema, Xabi Alonso.
FC Barcelona playes in Nike footwear:
Ibrahimovic, Iniesta, Puyol, Pique, Dani Alves.
Real Madrid players in Nike boots:
Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Albiol, Marcelo, Van der Vaart.

Club sponsorships:
The sponsorships of the major sporting entities in the world are by no means for free.
Thus adidas is believed to pay around 40 million Euros a year for the sponsorship of Real Madrid.
Nike is supposedly paying around 30 million Euros a year for the sponsorship of FC Barcelona. On top of that comes performance based bonuses so that the sponsorship of FC Barcelona last season probably around 40 million Euros.
When Florentino Perez was elected president of Real Madrid in June 2009 and subsequently brought players like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo to the club he also made it clear to adidas that he wanted a better deal on their running contract. adidas of course would also be able to understand the benefits of the new Real Madrid loaded with the greatest stars in the world of football. So the decision to increase the deal came about without too much disagreement.
On top of that Real Madrid gets 20 million Euros a year from bwin for the shirt sponsorship.
FC Barcelona is currently sponsoring UNICEF as part of a charity package deal between the football entity and the UN child foundation.

Individual endorsement deals:
The players themselves also have individual deals with the big brands.
Thus the current deal Cristiano Ronaldo has with Nike is supposedly worth 6 million Euros a year to wear the Nike Mercurial Vapor boots.
Lionel Messi is getting 3 million Euros a year from adidas to wear the adidas F50 tune it boots. A deal one might expect to be improved considerably if his current form continues.

Messi vs. Ronaldo | Comparison Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Analysis:
Saturday the 10th of April 2010 the big clash in the Spanish League between eternal rivals will take place in the Bernabeu stadium in Madrid. Though the match will be 11 against 11 as is customary in football the pre-match focus is primarily centered upon just two players: Messi and Ronaldo. Lionel and Cristiano.
Below we will look at their respective stats for the season 2009/10 in the Spanish League. The stats related exclusively to Spanish league matches and thus exclude their performances in the Spanish Cup and the Champions League (and in the case of FC Barcelona their other matches as reigning champs of the Uefa Champions League).

Direct red:01
Double yellow:01
Off side:817
Assist: 93
Ball losses: 235227
Ball wins:4216

…………….
As can be seen from the table above both players make significant contributions to the overall production of their teams. However, since football is a team sport and 11 players are on the field for each side it can be difficult to analyse individual stats out of context.
Cristiano has more shots on goal than Messi. But Messi has scored more goals than Ronaldo thus having a far higher accuracy. But is that due to the fact that Real Madrid is playing a more direct way with more shots on goal as a team than FC Barcelona ? Which on the other hand might rely on playing the ball through for better but fewer chances .. Or is Messi simply better in front of goal than Ronaldo.
Messi has more assists than Ronaldo but again is that due to the way of playing of the team or is he better to spot his fellow team mates for open chances or are the surrounding Barca players better than the team mates of Cristiano when it comes to finishing in front of goal ?
The individual stats do not answer such questions which would either require additional stats or are simply unanswerable due to the way that football works. Being primarily a team sport where individual stats might not be bringing as much evidence about a player’s performance than in other sports such as basketball.

The data is taken from the Spanish sportspaper Marca:
Marca stats Cristiano
Marca stats Messi

Two Real Madrid players among the nominees for FIFA World Player of the year

News:
The 5 nominees for FIFA world player of the year 2009 have been revealed. The nominees are: Messi, Xavi, Iniesta (FC Barcelona) – Kaka’ and Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid).
The award will take place on the 21st of December.
Besides the individual honors there will also be a team of the year selected among 55 players.
From Spain and Real Madrid those are: Xabi Alonso (formerly Liverpool), Iker Casillas y Sergio Ramos.
From Brazil and Real Madrid: Kaka’ (formerly AC Milan)
From France and Real Madrid Karim Benzema (formerly Lyon)
From Portugal and Real Madrid Cristiano Ronaldo (formerly Manchester United) and Pepe
FC Barcelona has the most players in pool not surprisingly given their fine performance during the season 2008/09 winning the treble (League , Cup + Champions League). An achievement never accomplished before by a Spanish side.

The new signings for Real Madrid who played elsewhere during the season 08/09 are probably selected due to their performance with their former club rather than due to their accomplishments with Real Madrid.
The problem with the award is that it runs square to the football season since it follows the calendar year and the football season goes from summer to summer. Since most awards in football as is the case elsewhere also are heavily shewed towards the winners what the award really reflects is the season 08/09 though in principal the award is given for the performance throughout the calendar year 2009.
But surely while the spring of 2009 will weigh heavily the fall of 2009 will not since no titles have been awarded and the season is still underway. The “best” players are usually those on the winning sides and since nobody has won anything yet for the season 2009/10 the emphasis will surely be on the spring of 2009 and possibly the fall of 2008.
