Messi | Ronaldo | FC Barcelona | Real Madrid | adidas | Nike

Sportsmoney:
The match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona “El Clasico” the absolute highlight of the Spanish season is not just a match between two sports clubs. But also a match between the two giants in the world of sporting goods brands adidas and Nike.
Real Madrid is sponsored by adidas. FC Barcelona is sponsored by Nike. Lionel Messi is sponsored by adidas. Cristiano Ronaldo is sponsored by Nike.
But not only the absolute superstars of the two teams wear nike/adidas boots. Most other players in the two teams wear footwear from one of the two athletic apparel brand giants.
Among the more prominent players in FC Barcelona in adidas footwear:
Messi, Xavi, Milito.
Real Madrid players in adidas:
Higuain, Raul, Kaka, Benzema, Xabi Alonso.
FC Barcelona playes in Nike footwear:
Ibrahimovic, Iniesta, Puyol, Pique, Dani Alves.
Real Madrid players in Nike boots:
Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Albiol, Marcelo, Van der Vaart.

Club sponsorships:
The sponsorships of the major sporting entities in the world are by no means for free.
Thus adidas is believed to pay around 40 million Euros a year for the sponsorship of Real Madrid.
Nike is supposedly paying around 30 million Euros a year for the sponsorship of FC Barcelona. On top of that comes performance based bonuses so that the sponsorship of FC Barcelona last season probably around 40 million Euros.
When Florentino Perez was elected president of Real Madrid in June 2009 and subsequently brought players like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo to the club he also made it clear to adidas that he wanted a better deal on their running contract. adidas of course would also be able to understand the benefits of the new Real Madrid loaded with the greatest stars in the world of football. So the decision to increase the deal came about without too much disagreement.
On top of that Real Madrid gets 20 million Euros a year from bwin for the shirt sponsorship.
FC Barcelona is currently sponsoring UNICEF as part of a charity package deal between the football entity and the UN child foundation.

Individual endorsement deals:
The players themselves also have individual deals with the big brands.
Thus the current deal Cristiano Ronaldo has with Nike is supposedly worth 6 million Euros a year to wear the Nike Mercurial Vapor boots.
Lionel Messi is getting 3 million Euros a year from adidas to wear the adidas F50 tune it boots. A deal one might expect to be improved considerably if his current form continues.

Messi vs. Ronaldo | Comparison Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Analysis:
Saturday the 10th of April 2010 the big clash in the Spanish League between eternal rivals will take place in the Bernabeu stadium in Madrid. Though the match will be 11 against 11 as is customary in football the pre-match focus is primarily centered upon just two players: Messi and Ronaldo. Lionel and Cristiano.
Below we will look at their respective stats for the season 2009/10 in the Spanish League. The stats related exclusively to Spanish league matches and thus exclude their performances in the Spanish Cup and the Champions League (and in the case of FC Barcelona their other matches as reigning champs of the Uefa Champions League).

…………….
As can be seen from the table above both players make significant contributions to the overall production of their teams. However, since football is a team sport and 11 players are on the field for each side it can be difficult to analyse individual stats out of context.
Cristiano has more shots on goal than Messi. But Messi has scored more goals than Ronaldo thus having a far higher accuracy. But is that due to the fact that Real Madrid is playing a more direct way with more shots on goal as a team than FC Barcelona ? Which on the other hand might rely on playing the ball through for better but fewer chances .. Or is Messi simply better in front of goal than Ronaldo.
Messi has more assists than Ronaldo but again is that due to the way of playing of the team or is he better to spot his fellow team mates for open chances or are the surrounding Barca players better than the team mates of Cristiano when it comes to finishing in front of goal ?
The individual stats do not answer such questions which would either require additional stats or are simply unanswerable due to the way that football works. Being primarily a team sport where individual stats might not be bringing as much evidence about a player’s performance than in other sports such as basketball.

The data is taken from the Spanish sportspaper Marca:
Marca stats Cristiano
Marca stats Messi

FC Barcelona started the campaign in La Liga on the 31st of August with a home match against Sporting Gijon. Barca won the match 3-0. Goals from Bojan , Keita , and Ibrahimovic.

The Barcelona based daily writes Arranque de Campeon in the headtitle. “The start of the Champion”. Subtitle is “Bojan opened the road to victory in the league start and Ibrahimovic scored his first goal as player in blue and red.

Marca first of September 2009

The headtitle reads: The first to arrive the year to come. Florentino has already tied up the bomb for the summer 2010. Hoeness sent an email yesterday to Real Madrid emphazising the syntony between Robben and Ribery – a way to insinate that FC Bayern would not sell Ribery before the closure of the transfer window. Madrid is a bit short when it comes to wingers after the sale of Robben there is only one real winger in the club – Cristiano.

The first 11 pages are dedicated to Real Madrid. The following 4 to Atletico Madrid and only on page 16 there is coverage of FC Barcelona’s match against Sporting Gijon.
